BlockSite, in fairness#

BlockSite is the most installed blocker we looked at. Its Chrome Web Store listing shows 1,000,000 users and a 4.5 rating from 32.4K ratings. It offers a block list, schedules, a Pomodoro style focus mode, category and keyword blocking, password protection, uninstall prevention, a custom blocked page, a site redirect option, daily usage limits, insights, and sync with its iOS and Android apps. If you want one tool across phone and laptop, it is a reasonable choice.

Why people look for a BlockSite alternative#

We could not verify review trends, so we won't claim them. These are the practical reasons that follow from what BlockSite itself publishes:

• Paid features. BlockSite's site promotes a Premium plan with a 30 day guarantee. If you want the full feature set without a subscription, a free or one-time option may suit you better.
• Privacy preferences. BlockSite's listing discloses that it handles web history. Some people prefer tools that keep everything local with no account.
• A different approach. BlockSite mostly blocks, with memes or a custom page when you visit. If blocking works until you give yourself "one quick look", you may want a tool that handles breaks differently. We wrote about that pattern in why website blockers don't work.
• Stricter blocking. A browser extension can be removed from the browser. Desktop apps can lock things down harder.

StayFocusd, now published by Sensor Tower, has 700,000 Chrome users. It restricts the time you spend on distracting sites and can block whole sites, subdomains, paths, pages or in-page content. The Nuclear Option blocks sites for hours and cannot be canceled, a Require Challenge guards your settings, and it can hide YouTube Shorts, comments and recommendations. Cold Turkey Blocker

Best for: people who need a block they genuinely cannot undo.

Cold Turkey is a Windows and macOS app with a companion Chrome extension that only works alongside it. It blocks websites and apps, can block the whole internet with exceptions, supports weekly schedules, locks blocks in place, and prevents uninstalling during a locked block. Breaks can require typing random text or waiting out a delay. Settings and stats stay on your computer.

Trade-offs: no Linux, ChromeOS, Android or iOS, and you install a desktop app.

Price: a free version for basic website blocking with a 7 day Pro trial; Pro is a one-time purchase for all computers you personally use.

Freedom

Best for: the closest match to BlockSite's cross-device idea.

Freedom blocks websites, apps or the entire internet on Mac, Windows, iOS, Android and Chromebook, with sessions that sync across devices. Premium adds scheduling, recurring sessions and Locked Mode.

Trade-offs: on Mac and Windows the Chrome extension needs the desktop app. Scheduling is a Premium feature.

Switching from BlockSite without losing momentum#

Moving to a new blocker is a good moment to rethink your list rather than copy it over.

1. Write down the sites you actually lose time on. Most people have one or two that do the real damage. Start there.
2. Decide how strict you need to be. If you undo blocks when nobody is watching, choose a tool with locks (Cold Turkey, LeechBlock NG's lockdown, StayFocusd's Nuclear Option). If you mostly slip during "quick breaks", choose one that makes breaks deliberate, like Redirect or one sec.
